It helps in so many ways especially for a person who mainly reads fiction. i listen to this programme on radio in the early hours if i wake up early and that programme is called Soul Yatra on Fm 104 Delhi. It is hosted by one Mr Sharath. i find his words and anecdotes very motivating and one of such was on Ramanujan. Feel like sharing today with you...since ur post is about the Man who knew infinity. This is how it is stated...
During his school days, he impressed upon his classmates, senior students and teachers with his extraordinary question. Needless to say then despite him being so good with numbers, Arithmetic, geometry and algebra that particular day the impression was not so much of a genius but of an odd pupil who asks a foolishly odd question the answer of which even a donkey can tell.
A friend of his recounted that in an arithmetic class on division, the teacher said that if three bananas were given to three boys, each boy would get a banana. The teacher generalized this idea. Ramanujan is said to have asked:
Sir, if no banana is distributed to no student,
will everyone still get a banana?
That particular day everybody in the class had laughed out loud and we can well imagine what the teacher would have said...
Surely i guess the book must be mentioning the precise age of the genius when he went on to prove that
Infinity theory.
Thank you once again for drawing my attention towards the book and hence Our Great genius. If we continue to remain oblivious to their subtle clues about who they actually are, then we will continue to remain in the dark until one fine day they strike our head hard until it bleeds, to stick the thought through our hard skull that they are not as good as they seem and it is high time we realize our stupidity!Priyankahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13083770655025542785noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6549587225281116329.post-24086769906216939982014-08-02T12:47:49.756+05:302014-08-02T12:47:49.756+05:30Ah! Well i am here now and i wish you many many more. Not that i had not seen ur post but i was facing connectivity problems. Some error message kept flashing some DNS server crap.
Yeah memories are priceless. Getting beer is no big deal but i am sure replaying the whole scene of the entire dash must be cracking u with laughter and smiles till date. That is what is 'priceless'.
long ago we saw this movie called Summer of 42. There is a scene where the main character an adolescent boy's friend is supposed to creep into the father's room to get some ciggies for all of them, and then there is this dialogue it is hilarious, " Making two two copies". It has got stuck with all of us. Something similar happens in the movie...it is not a matter of beer or anything...it is that moment and the funniness of that moment that stays forever. We still crack up when we hear that word copy because all we can remember is that scene from the movie and '' Making two two copies".
u will have to see the movie to know what he was making two two copies and for which purpose. The moral of the movie being, in everbody's life there is a summer of 42.
Nice to hear your monsoon story. And in everbody's life there is a monsoon story too...i wonder if something as interesting happened for me during monsoons in Chennai. Maybe i can think and remember...Shivani Singhhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08693724458955705943noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6549587225281116329.post-50358445163356909432014-07-21T15:54:32.177+05:302014-07-21T15:54:32.177+05:30hello Shivani ji,

My fav is of course is the woman issue based which uses Gulzaar Sahab's famous poetry composition as the show title. It is called Kitni Girhain Baaki Hain. What a coincidence the story that is aired before/after that is just what you have talked about. How come the wrong always wins and the right suffers till the end but does not quit. The serial title is called Maat...maat meaning outwit/ outsmart/defeat.
i guess life is like that but then one should choose to stick with what is right...these days they tell u be street smart...actually indirectly learn to hoodwink and deceive and use those techniques when required. Like they say in Hindi jab ghee seedhee ungli sey nahin nikalta toh ungli tedhee karni padti hai.
How much tedhee that is one question i keep asking myself. As for me i prefer to go without than to have something if it impinges on my self respect .
Thank you for stopping by at my other post and also for that hello message. Apologies on the delay though. Chi...i am quoting excerpts from the book for you...
Chinese Bamboo... ~Aleph, Paulo Coelho~
I start by telling her a story.
"A man stumbles and falls into a deep hole. He asks a passing priest to help him out. The priest blesses him and walks on. Hours later, a doctor comes by. The man asks for help, but the doctor merely studies his injuries from afar, writes him a prescription and tells him to buy the medicine from the nearest pharmacy. Finally, a complete stranger appears. Again the man asks for help, and the stranger jumps in the hole. "Now what are we going to do?" says the man. "Now both of us are trapped down here." To which the stranger replies: " No we're not. I am from around here and I know how to get out.""
"Meaning", asks Monica.
"That I need strangers like that," I explain. "My roots are ready, but I will only manage to grow with the help of others. Not just you or J or my wife, but people I have never met. I am sure of that."
~Aleph; Paulo Coelho explaining the Chinese Bamboo to Monica, his agent. Apparently the Chinese Bamboo spends five years as a little shoot, using that time to develop its root system. And, then from one moment to the next, it puts on a spurt and grows up to twenty five meters high.~
Hope you enjoy the book as much as i did although my favorite has always been The Alchemist. :)
Of late you've stopped visiting me...i wonder if i started boring you with my stories on nature and plants. But i do also talk about my anger anf frustrations...in fact my post titled Genuflection is one such. i wonder what ur input would be. Little did i know myself then that people in India have it in their homes too so when we went to Singapore for our son's graduation ceremony and we went visiting the Botanical gardens there we asked the tour guide to show us Chinese Bamboo. i tore my hair in despair then because it was there in my place, in my colony in my country too and i was not aware of it's strangeness/ uniqueness. Felt like sharing this with you.
Thank you for sharing this. Paul Coelho's book Aleph mentions Chinese Bamboo in the same flavor. But I would not agree with your conclusion that the world does not fear unpredictability. I would say that the world is petrified of unpredictability and that is why science ( your ISRO example) and commerce ( insurance is an example ) do so much by way of extensive preparedness. But despite that things do not happen as planned. The issue is to have a coping strategy under these circumstances- a safety net ( like insurance) or a contingency plan when both plans A and B fail.
